Installation process and surface preparation for cobblestone
Correctly laid concrete sidewalk forms flexible connections among cobblestones due to binding material located between them. Load of cobblestone upon the base is distributed uniformly. Street cobblestone can be proper in case of good base. Strength of the base along with the soil quality should be oriented to bear the supposed load. Base thickness 15 to 20 cm is sufficient for pedestrian paths or sections around the house. Roads with intensive traffic may have the base thickness up to 40 cm.
Binding material filled into joints between cobblestones is very important for durability of cobblestone pavement. This material ensures the stability of pavement and uniform load distribution over large sections. In case when joints are not filled completely, the cobblestone will start moving upon a slightest load and will not ensure its uniform distribution over sections of large area. The joints are filled with fine wash river sand that is capable to pass water.
Leveling should be carried out on dry cobblestone surface and only in case when it is necessary. Cobblestone surface is leveled by means of vibrator with rubber working surface or manually
The base should be prepared prior to laying the cobblestone. It is carried out by compaction of ground with formation thereon of layer of compacted sand and crushed stone.
Laying of cobblestone
Cobblestone should be laid carefully in order to it would not damage the base surface. When laying the cobblestone, it is necessary to keep 3 to 6 mm gap between the edges for the binder. Since cobblestone production allows for slight differences in colour, cobblestones from different packages should be used which helps avoiding deviations from correct colour combinations within large areas.
